A Radiological Investigation on the Hand Development in Human Fetuses Throughout the Fetal Period and an Evaluation Performed in Terms of its Clinical Importance Hand Development International Journal of Morphology
Raziye,Desdicioglu; Ceren,Uguz; Kadir,Desdicioglu; Osman,Sulak; Mehmed Ali,Malas.
It was aimed in this study that the morphometric development of the hand in human fetuses throughout the fetal period be radiologically investigated and the clinical importance of this period be evaluated. A total of 50 fetuses with no external pathology or anomaly, and the ages of which varied between 20-40 gestational weeks were incorporated into the study. The fetuses were separated into groups according to gestational weeks, trimesters and months. After the general external measurements of the fetuses were performed, mammography and hand radiographies of the fetuses were shot in the way that their hands would be in a pronational position. Afterwards, the morphometric measurements of the hands were performed with the help of a digital caliper through...

Analysis and Clinical Importance of Superficial Arterial Palmar Irrigation and its Variants over 86 Cases International Journal of Morphology
Ottone,Nicolás Ernesto; Prum,Natalia; Dominguez,Mario; Blasi,Esteban; Medan,Carlos; Shinzato,Sergio; Finkelstein,Diana; Bertone,Vicente Hugo.
The classic description of the hand's superficial palmar arch is based on the anastomosis among the ulnar and radiopalmar arteries, a branch of the radial artery. However, the arch formation is highly variable regarding the size of the arteries that make it up and due to the existence of branches coming from other arteries and adding up as tributary to it. The objective of this paper is to classify these possible varieties, to define the formation of the arch, the reasons for its variable arrangement and the importance of its clinical and surgical applications. 86 formalized hands were dissected at 40%. There is prevalence concerning the size of the ulnar artery, with or without an arch. The anatomic knowledge of the variability in the arch formation...

Anatomical Snuffbox and it Clinical Significance: A Literature Review International Journal of Morphology
Cerda,Aladino; del Sol,Mariano.
The anatomical snuffbox is a small triangular area situated in the radial part of the wrist, often used to perform clinical and surgical procedures. Despite the frequency with which this area is used, there is scarce information in literature about its details. The objective of this study is detailed knowledge of the anatomical snuffbox's anatomy and its components, the reported alterations at this portion, besides the clinical uses and significance of this area.

Course Pattern of the Muscular Branch of the Median Nerve in Sri Lankans Hand International Journal of Morphology
Senanayake,Kithsiri J; Salgado,Sujatha; Fernando,Ranil.
Transligamentous variant of the recurrent motor branch is having a higher risk of getting damage during both endoscopic and open carpal tunnel releases. The incidence of the transligamentous variant is about 7% to 80% world wide. This wide variation of the incidence could be due to the failure of identification of the distal edge of the flexor retinaculum from the obliquely oriented fascia that runs from the distal edge. We used two criteria to identify the distal edge; the abrupt change in the thickness of the flexor retinaculum and its colour change in cross section. The incidence of transligamentous variant is rare and the reported high incidence could be due to an error in identification of the distal edge of the flexor retinaculum as shown by Kosin...

Extensor indicis brevis Muscle: an Unusual Muscular Variant International Journal of Morphology
Garbelotti Junior,S; Yukio Fukuda,T; Rodrigues Pereira,V; Garcia Lucareli,P; Olave,E.
Knowledge of anatomical variations of the musculoskeletal system is important for interpreting unusual clinical presentations. We observed the presence of an abnormal extensor indicis muscle in the left hand of an adult male cadaver. In this case, the muscle comes from the ligament and over the scaphoideum and trapezoideum bones and continues after the short muscle belly; it is attached to the dorsal aponeurosis of the indicis. This muscular disposition was described in other studies which demonstrated approximately 1.0% of incidence. Clinically, this anatomical variation may be associated with pain and swelling at the back of the hand. In these cases symptoms tend to increase due to mechanical stress and can be confused with the presence of a dorsal...

Morphologic Aspects of Abductor digiti minimi Muscle in the Hand International Journal of Morphology
Buarque de Gusmão,Luiz Carlos; Frassy Feijó,Mario Jorge; Sousa-Rodrigues,Célio Fernando de.
The Abductor digiti minimi muscle, and the other hypotenar muscles, frequently presents anatomical variations. According to literature, this muscle can be composed by one, two or three muscular beams, as well as it can present accessory muscular beams. In dissecations of 40 formolized hands, we objectified to study the morphology and variations of the Abductor digiti minimi muscle. The muscle presented two muscular beams in 82,5 %, three beams in 15% and only 1 beam in 2,5 % of the cases. In none of cases accessory muscular beams were observed. When compared with literature, are observed statistics difference in some studied aspects. The results found in the research allow to affirm that the Abductor digiti minimi muscle is formed by two muscular beams in...

Morphology and Morphometry of the Distal Articular Surface of Lunate Bone in a Kenyan Population International Journal of Morphology
Muthoka,Johnstone M; Kaisha,Wycliff O; Gikenye,Gachambira; Ogengo,Julius A.
The morphology and morphometry of the distal articular surface of the lunate exhibits inter-population variations. They are of clinical importance to hand surgeons due to their influence on the occurrence of proximal pole arthrosis which is a cause of ulnar-side wrist pain. The objective of the study was to determine the morphology and morphometry of the distal articular surface of the lunate bone in an adult Kenyan population. A descriptive cross-sectional study at the Department of Human Anatomy, University of Nairobi. Fifty-six human hands obtained for routine dissection were used. The morphology of the distal articular surface of the lunate was classified as either Type I or Type II depending on the absence or presence of a medial facet for...

Prevalence and Distribution of Sesamoid Bones of the Hand: A Radiographic Study in Turkish Subjects International Journal of Morphology
Kose,Ozkan; Guler,Ferhat; Turan,Adil; Canbora,Kerem; Akalin,Serdar.
The purpose of this study was to examine the plain anteroposterior radiographs of the hands in Turkish subjects in order to determine the prevalence of sesamoid bones and their distribution. A total of 923 hand radiographs from 459 men and 464 women with a mean age of 43.76±14.8 years (range, 18-85 years) were examined. Two sesamoid bones (ulnar and radial) were always present at the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint of the thumb (100%). One sesamoid bone in the thumb interphalangeal (IP) joint was observed in 21.3% of the cases. The prevalence of sesamoid bone of the index and little MCP joint were 36.6% and 53.2% respectively. Sesamoid bones palmar to the MCP joints of the middle finger and ring finger were rare; the incidence for these locations being...
